This Is Where It Begins

Thanks to a very special person, I’ve got my own music blog. =)

I’ve been thinking about a question that’s been raises over and over again recently, “What is Music, and Who gets to call it music”? People who have heard of John Cage probably know what I’m talking ab0ut. The first time I “heard” his 4′33 was from “Beethoven’s Virus”. Now how would I describe that experience; from to the story’s point of view, it was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. That’s how I remembered his name, and his work.

Then there was my fine arts class at SFU. We learned about contemporary music about midway through the course, and John Cage was among one of the most heated discussions. Many people did not consider it being music. You know, its just 3 movements of silence right? No notes, no rhythms, no melody, no nothing. I guess at that time I would not consider it being music either, I can only call it “a brilliance of thought”. But it does achieve something magnificent; a set of for the sounds around us that we ignore. You gotta admit, that’s a brilliant idea, but would it be considered music?

I guess that’s what you will find here — my definition of music.

I hope all of you who care enough about the world of music would find the music embedded deep down in your hearts.

Remember to search for it =)
